Black Dragon

NP-797r

Alder, 12"

The plethora of details on the dragon head handle make this wand a visual treat. The scales that make up the body of the handle are carved individually, and you can even see some teeth in the dragon's mouth. Created September 2014.
Carving this wand took about 17 hours from start to finish. I started by carving the general shape of the head, adding details like the horns, snout, and mouth. The shape of each scale is carved with a gouge, then the recessed areas are carved away to create the illusion of overlap. The same technique is used for the belly plates. The finished wand (before staining) shows the details very clearly.
