Stay on the bright side of life

Hickory is hard. Really hard. Carving hickory with hand tools takes a great deal of patience because it can be frustrating when you cut into the wood expecting a nice big shaving to lift off smoothly, but what you get is a no bigger than a piece of oatmeal. The key is to carve for short periods of time to rest your hands in between and come away after each session noting the progress you made. The same approach could be taken for a lot of things in life, actually.
