Bringing a lion to life
Sculptural carving is challenging. The key is to take it slowly, one step at a time, and map out your design as best you can before starting. I started by carving the general shape of the lion's face and mane. Once I was happy with that, I moved onto carving the mane itself. At the time I made it, I didn't own any gouges, so it is possible to do designs like this with only a knife.
